The BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been released for the 2022 model year, the automaker confirmed in its update press release for the new model year.
With the all-electric iX3 not slated to reach the United States, that leaves BMW without a plug-in offering in the entry-luxury SUV segment, which is quickly filling up with new EV models.
BMW has just added a revised X3 plug-in hybrid to its lineup for the 2020 model year. The X3 xDrive30e uses a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission, with an electric motor crammed into the transmission housing. The total system output is 288 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.
The all-wheel-drive X3 xDrive30e is rated at 18 miles of electric range with a combined efficiency rating of 60 MPGe. In hybrid mode, it achieves a combined EPA-rated fuel economy of 24 mpg. BMW also cites a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds.
When the revised X3 plug-in hybrid launches, the all-electric BMW iX3 will arrive in the US around this time. BMW later dropped plans to bring the iX3 here, so we’ve reached out to the automaker to see if the recall of the X3 plug-in hybrid has anything to do with it.
Both the X3 xDrive30e and iX3 are derivatives of the popular X3 SUV. For 2022, the 6-cylinder X3 models get a 48-volt mild hybrid system, with regenerative braking coming from a plug-in hybrid, according to BMW. However, the larger iX SUV, along with the i4, will be coming to US dealers soon.
Meanwhile, in a recent drive, we’ve found BMW’s latest plug-in hybrid entry feeling conflicted in their priorities — not emphasizing the electric side as much as they can or selling the driver on a performance or efficiency advantage. So maybe we won’t be missing much.
